Newly-enacted criminal laws to come into effect from July 1 | India News

NEW DELHI: Three newly-enacted criminal justice laws will come into effect from July 1, 2024, according to a government notification.
The laws – the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita and the Bharatiya Sakshya Act – got the Parliament’s approval on December 21, 2023 during the winter session. President Droupadi Murmu gave her assent on December 25.
These laws will replace the British-era Indian Penal Code, the Code of Criminal Procedure and the Indian Evidence Act of 1872.They aim at completely overhauling the criminal justice system in the country.
As per the new laws, generation and supply of records will be in electronic form like zero-FIR, e-FIR, chargesheet and victims will be provided information in digital form.
